As individual schools each develop their own web pages, the following guidelines will be used in the planning and design of the web site.

Content Responsibility

The school technology team or committee or individual appointed by the the school's faculty senate will be responsible for the school's "official" web page design and approval, and keeping the web page current.

All subject matter on "official" school web pages should relate to curriculum, instruction, school-authorized activities, general information that is appropriate or of interest to others, or it should relate to Randolph County Schools or individual schools in the county.

All pages should comply county and state web publishing policy.

Content should be appropriate, in good taste, and not harmful to any individual or group.

Business or commercial links or the acknowledgment of a business should be restricted to business partners and/or materials that are educational, provide technical support, or are germane to the philosophy of the school/county. Commercial advertising is prohibited.

Documents should be available to validate information.

Quality and Design

Text should be grammatically correct, accurately spelled, and have pleasing appearance.

Documents may not contain objectionable material or point (link) to objectionable material.

Every home page should have a title and top level heading that are the same and reference the theme of the home page.

Information such as the e-mail address of the responsible contact person, copyright, and the last date updated should be included. Information on a page should remain current and be accurate.

Since "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" it is difficult to say what makes an attractive web site. But school/county web pages should contain typical, good web design elements including titles and top level headings that reference the theme, sparing use of text with graphics, highlighting, logical organization, use of thumbnail images where possible, meaningful text with graphics, user friendly navigation and text only navigation. The school/county web pages should be neat and attractive showing good planning and design.

Student Safeguards

Web page documents may include only the first name and initial of the student's last name. Nicknames may be used.

Documents may not include a student's personal information such as home address, home telephone number, the names of other family members, etc.. They may not include any information that indicates the physical location of a student at a given time, other than attendance at a particular school or participation in a class or activities.

Published e-mail address are restricted to staff members or to a general group e-mail address where arriving e-mail is forward to a staff member.

Decision on publishing student pictures (video or still), audio clips, and student names will be made by the technology team, faculty senate committee or person responsible for the web page. Parental permission will be obtained and kept on file.

Other

All communications via the school/county web pages will comply with the school/county Internet usage policy.

Given the rapid change in the technology, web page policy will be reviewed and updated on an annual basis or more frequently if required.
