The
children were excited as they came into the multipurpose
room at Third Ward Elementary School on Thursday afternoon
September 30th to find out who was the top reader for the
Summer Reading Program. Mr. Band went from class to class
in the morning presenting certificates to all students who
participated. Those students who read 12 or more books drew
numbers for prizes. The top reader for the classroom was
also recognized with a Third Ward pin.
This
year, every child was required to read at least one book
in order to come to the awards assembly. Out of 309 students,
only 21 students did not earn this honor. The goal was 5,700
books. The children read 6,708 books.
Now,
the time had come to find out who was the top reader for
the grade level and the top reader overall. The top readers
per grade level were as follows:
After
the awards were presented, Mr. Gene George shaved Mr. Band's
mustache that he has had for thirty years while the children
watched. Mr. Band dismissed the children to return to their
classrooms.

Following
the program, Mr. Band stated that, "The goal of the
Summer Reading Program is to challenge students to read
during the summer. The more students read, the better they
become. The better they can read, the more success they
will find in school."
