Hero’s Hall of Fame
The National Association of Elementary
School Principals developed Hero’s Hall of Fame. This is the fourth
year of the program. The program was designed to help students understand
that heroes are not just sports figures or movie stars. Heroes
can be found where each student lives. Heroes are people who are
special; they care about others and are leaders in the community.
Heroes can be a parent, grandparent or a neighbor.
The school improvement council chaired by Mrs. Lorraine
Smith develops a list of potential candidates. The list is
reviewed and the school improvement council makes a selection.
This selection is then presented to the Faculty Senate for
approval. Following approval from the faculty senate, Mrs.
Smith and Mr. Band visit the honoree.
A schedule is established where the honoree can come and
visit with the children by class. Our goal is to make sure
that the children get to know the hero.
A celebration day and date is established. Dr. Green,
our music teacher, develops a program, which emphasizes the
background of the honoree. The children sing songs that relate
to the honoree.
A display board is made giving some background of the honoree
through pictures and written information. This board is displayed
during the ceremony and is on display in the hall for the entire
school year until the next Hero’s Hall of Fame Celebration.
A plaque is presented to the honoree to remember the occasion.
This year, we honor Dr. Mary Boyd, a local pediatrician. Dr.
Boyd is married to Judge Henning. She has two children. Caitlin
graduated from Elkins High School on 5/28/04 and will be attending
college in the fall. Colin is an 8th grade student at Elkins Middle
School. Both Caitlin and Colin were students at Third Ward. Dr.
Boyd and Judge Henning were strong supporters of the school while
their children were here. They continue to support the school. Dr.
Boyd coordinated our Read Aloud program for several years.
It is our privilege that we honor and outstanding pediatrician,
a committed supporter of the community and an avid sportsperson.
This is truly a person the children can look up to as a hero, said
Barry Band, Principal.
