Belief Statements
We believe that residents of West Virginia and surrounding areas who are deeply concerned about the environment could enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness more frequently in our society if they worked locally towards a global unity: A unity of missions, goals, objectives, policies, resources and results.
We have resolved to unify our individual and organizational forces in the hope of preserving natural areas, conserving resources and truly living ecologically in West Virginia in the near future.
To those ends, we have also resolved to create a permanent policy forum for social and environmental choice in the state of West Virginia.
Finally, we seek to comprehensively organize people working for natural areas, resource conservation and human ecology in West Virginia and in surrounding regions.
Policies and Activities
We purchase, lease and hold conservation easements in natural areas to hold them in public trust for preservation, conservation and ecological development. Lease and user fees pay for land acquisition and management.
We invest in environmental businesses that are focused on resource conservation to compete with other marketplace options. Returns on our investments go toward new investments and to other non-profit organizations.
We also invest in cooperating non-profit, non-governmental organizations that are working for natural areas, resource conservation and human ecology. We ask other organization members to join us and we invest their dues in our programs.
To sustain our own organization programs, we rely first on membership contributions and then we offer a number of fee-based, not for-profit services to the public. For example, we sponsor and organize public environmental meetings, we administer non-profit organization finances and we sponsor and conduct environmental policy research and education studies.
Programs
The
Ecology and Community programs supervise relationships between UNWV and other local, state, regional, national and international organizations. The Habitat program works with land and water resources owned or leased by the organization and with collaborating property owners to develop ecological operating areas in WV.
The Plant and Animal programs works with plants and animals in or on land and water resources owned or leased by the organization and with collaborating property owners to develop ecological operating areas in WV.
The Air, Water and Soil programs work with atmospheric, hydrologic and soil processes and related operations to maintain or improve conditions for living beings.
Finally, the Economic Policies program guides the financing, development and evaluation of for-profit organizations that operate ecologically within the collaborative framework of UNWV.
