The following was taken from the 1935 year book:

" Three Hundred years ago when secondary education was in its infancy in our country, the site of our town was still a wilderness.  It was not until many years after schools had been established in all parts of the nation that the town itself was a reality.  About 1889 the first houses were built; by 1904, when the lumber and coal industries were being developed, the town began to grow.

In 1900 the first class was graduated from high school.  At that time both the grades and the high school were housed in the same building, one that was on the site of our present Central school.  There were perhaps fifteen or twenty students in what was then termed the high school.  These students were given a diploma upon the completion of two years' work.  The curriculum consisted of the three R's supplemented by a bit of history and advanced mathematics.

Time passed.  In 1909 First Ward School was built, where both the grade school and the high school were housed.  The population of the town continued to increase, and in 1914 the Central School was erected.  The increase in the size of the graduating classes after 1914 indicates the rapid growth of the high school.  In that year there were twenty-one graduates; in 1916, thirty-seven; in 1921, seventy-eight; and in 1926, one hundred fifteen.  By this time the housing of these students had become a serious problem, and plans were begun to erect a new high school building.  It is this building that is our high school today.

The personnel of our high school today is vastly different from the one that existed in 1900.  We have  a student body of seven hundred forty, a faculty of twenty-five, a full time principal and an  assistant principal.  Instruction has gone far beyond the three R's.  A student may choose any one of three courses offered, according to the work he is preparing to do when he graduates.  The classical course prepares him for entrance to the department of Arts and Sciences in a college or university; the technical, for further training in scientific or engineering courses; and the general for work that does not require a college education.

To give adequate credit to those who have been responsible for the progress and the development of our school would be impossible.  First of all there have been those who, in the past when funds came entirely from taxes on real estate, were willing to take upon themselves an additional financial burden, so that the youth of their town might have the best.  Then there have been the various boards of education who have used this money wisely and well.  Guiding and advising these board members have been our superintendents, each of who has left the system a little better than he found it.  The principals and teachers who have been directly responsible for the welfare of the boys and girls have done their part, too.  To them has been entrusted far more than instruction in the fundamentals of English, science, and mathematics:  they have by their precept and example molded character and given to Elkins the men and women who today are the town's representative citizens.

Past educational achievements challenge us to continue this work that has been begun.  Are we ready to assume our share of community responsibility, so that we may help our schools to meet the social changes that are taking place daily?"
