SPACE DAY

AT BURNSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

May 22, 1997

On May 22, all students and staff at Burnsville Elementary School added signatures to the "Embrace Space" poster provided by Lockheed Martin Company. The signatures were flown aboard the space shuttle in September. We are looking forward to receiving our poster after its long trip into space. We are also corresponding with an Aerospace Pen Pal, John Haskins.

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Hickman's class wrote a story about life in space:

Way up there above the clouds---where the sun is---is space.

There are planets, and we see the Earth below glowing.

The shuttle will take us into space. We need our space suits, oxygen tanks, food, tools (in case the shuttle breaks down) and a friend to keep us company.

We will be gone for 83 days. While we are there, we will look for planets and stars and jump off the shuttle. We could even see who could jump the highest. We might visit another planet.

It is time to come home. We have to turn the shuttle on with a key and a red button.

We will take off. The ride will be bumpy and the shuttle will turn upside down.

It will take us three hours and 5 seconds to get back to Earth.

We will tell our friends about our upside down ride and that we are starved. We would like a Happy Meal, mashed potatoes, meatloaf sandwiches and cake.

Some of us would like to go again.
