Welcome to Bruin Country. Burnsville Elementary is a small, rural elementary school. It is nestled in the beautiful hills of central West Virginia along the Little Kanawha River. Our community is conveniently located on Interstate 79. Plans are uderway for the development of the Little Kanawha Turnpike which will tie I-79 at Burnsville and I-77 in Wood County. With the addition of this new highway and the development of the Flatwoods area for commerce, the families and their children have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a small rural school as well as easy access to transportation routes to larger shopping areas. We currently have an enrollment of 170 students, served by 17 professional educators and 6 service personnel. Even though we are small and rural we have all of the advantages of most large schools. We have a varied curriculum that provides for instruction in all of the basic academic areas as well as the arts and physical education. We have an innovative home based program for three year olds, a school based full day program for four year olds, and the conventional Kindergarten through fourth grades.
Burnsville Elementary School began as the Burnsville Academy in the late 1800's and in 1916 a new building was built to house 1st through 12th grades on its current location. In 1925 expansion added new classrooms, a gymnasium, and an auditorium. In 1951 an annex was built to house vocational programs and a cafeteria. In 1969 a portable annex was moved to the site to house the then new kindergarten program. Then again in 1982 expansion again occured with the building of an annex for our new Pre-school/Headstart program.
Our attempt to pass a Bond/Levy failed, but the Braxton County Board of Education in their ten year plan, provides for the continuation of the elementary school at Burnsville. We still feel that a new school is in the future for Burnsville. With the construction of the Little Kanawha Turnpike and the construction of a new federal prison between Burnsville and Glenville, Burnsville will be at the center of a major transportation hub and probable population growth. We are very proud of our school history and other links are available to share some of our pride. I suggest you visit our Danny Heater link and our Alumni link for more history.

We are proud of our history, but even prouder of what we are presently doing and our future. Our technology program is first class. All of our students have access to computer assisted instruction in our modern computer lab which boasts 25 new computers and the latest in instructional software. Each classroom is fitted with an appropriate computer for individual use with stand alone programs and internet access, and our internet lab is equipped with fifteen units for browsing and research. We have correlated our curriculum to our technology programs so that all of our efforts are towards the same end. I invite you to visit our web site regularly. Watch for new links and updates. If in the Burnsville, WV area, please stop by the school and have lunch with us. If you have comments or suggestions please contact me by e-mail: cmmccoy@access.k12.wv.us
