1Dana Brown Charitable Trust Donates $100,000

In October, Burnsville Elementary School received a check for $100,000 from the Dana Brown Charitable Trust in St. Louis Missouri. Dana Brown, a St. Louis entrepreneur of great distinction, died at the age of 89 leaving a trust of nearly $45 million. He was known for his efforts to alleviate the suffering of children and to enhance their opportunities for productive and wholesome lives.

Dana Brown, who spent his early years in the Burnsville area, was the great-uncle of BES PreSchool Teacher, Deanna Brown Stewart. Funds will be invested until additional funds become available for a new school building.

The Danny Heater Story (On the Big Screen)

At Burnsville Elementary School, the story of Danny Heater is very much alive. In a 32-minute high school basketball game, Danny scored 135 points--the most ever by a high school, college, or professional player. In a recent article printed by the Charleston Gazette, a documentary produced by Kevin Downs, a Georgetown University professor is nearly three-fourths complete.
Danny Heater lives in the Washington suburbs and works as a ticked agent at Washington's Ronald Reagan National Airport.

BES Named Title I Distinguished School

During the November 9, 1998 meeting of the Braxton County Board of Education, Burnsville Elementary School was recognized as a West Virginia Title I Distinguisted School. Students at BES maintained high academic performance in reading and math for the past three years.
