Related Arts Team


Art  - 6th graders learn basic drawing skills as well as concepts of design and color.  Strong emphasis is placed on the development of creative thinking; 7th graders use problem solving skills that are learned through two-dimensional and three dimensional works of art.  Students refine basic skills learned in 6th grade.  Shading skills are developed and media and materials are explored; 8th grade students combine elements of art and principles off design to create artwork.  All skills are refined and the process of art criticism is applied.  Art history is explored through various projects.

Band  (Mr. Larry Virtue)- Band instruction in at Bridgeport Middle School will emphasize the preparation of students for eventual entry into the high school program.  Students who like additional challenge may audition for placement into the All County Cadet Band in the wintertime.  All students will participate in the annual spring concert (usually in May), and there will be some performing at assemblies, and at the Educational Fair.  We also have a jazz band that performs at the annual Lincoln High School Jazz Band Festival as well as at the spring concert.

BASE  (Mrs. Chris Serian)- (Basic Attitudes Skills and Experiences)  This course is based on the National Content Standards of Family and Consumer Science.  The FACS standards emphasizes four fundamental educational process in learning, including thinking, communication, leadership and management.  All grade levels are different and build on one another.  Our focus is on skills necessary for a productive and successful personal as well as professional life.

6th grade - conflict resolution, food lab preparation and basic hand sewing

7th grade - caring for children, continued food lab preparation and problem-solving for life

8th grade - school to work planning, cultural diversity, personal safety and machine sewing.

Computer Applications (Mrs. Alice Lynn Osbourn) - This class introduces and explores the uses of the productivity of business applications.  The students will learn how to use word processing, spreadsheet and database software as well as improving keyboarding techniques.

Music (Mrs. Evelyn Miller) - 6th graders concentrate on the notes in treble clef and orchestra instruments; 7th graders spend time learning about treble and bass clef along with in-depth study of the instruments; 8th graders concentrate on Mozart and Beethoven.  All classes learn the music symbols.  Choir is available during AA for those students interested in singing.

Health (Ms. Rita Scheick, Mr. Al Lanzy) - Middle School Teen Health: "...Students learn that good health habits can prevent illness and accidents.  As a motivating factor, they also learn that these good habits can improve the way they look, the way they perform in school, the way they interact with others, and the way they feel about themselves."

Physical Education (Mr. Al Lanzy, Ms. Rita Scheick) -  The PE team of teachers emphasize stretching, calisthenics, and various team sports, such as volleyball, basketball, rag ball, kickball, etc.  The lead up drills are conducted in all sports. Some other activities that students participate in are 3 on 3, basketball and tournament team volleyball, square dancing and the President's physical fitness test

 

Research (Mrs. Ginny Frank, Mrs. Jan Frenzel) - Using a Project-Based Learning format, students are presented with a "problem" or situation that they must solve through the creation of a project using various application software programs.  Students develop research techniques using both print and electronic resources.

Tech Ed - The study of Communication, Transportation, Manufacturing, and Construction.

Sixth Grade: BUILD 'EM AND BUST 'EM.  The students build a scale model bridge and test them with weight until they break.

Seventh Grade: EPICENTER-The students build a scale model skyscraper and shake them to pieces on the Epicenter Earthquake Machine.

Eighth Grade: MODULE ROTATION-The students rotate through twelve multi-media technology modules such as Flight Simulation, Robotics, and Radio.

Academic Enrichment (Formerly called "Gifted" Mrs. Torrey) - open to all students who qualify and may be taken as many times as he/she wants to take the class.  Curriculum varies each six weeks and the program offers activities to enrich and expand their learning environment.  These activities not only reinforce skills previously taught but also challenge them to develop or increase thinking and communication skills.  Each grade will also participate in Research, PowerPoint Presentations, Strategy Games, and Problem Solving activities.  These activities are modified for each grade level.
