Bridgeport, West Virginia, is a small residential town (population 7,306) located at the intersection of Interstate 79, a major North-South artery, and US Route 50, a major East-West highway. First chartered in 1816, the town was named for the first bridge in Harrison County, built across Simpson Creek in 1803.

Bridgeport's history is not one of big industries, exciting events, and momentous political decisions. It is instead a progression of people and an account of their activities.

Descendants of many of the town's first settlers still live in and around Bridgeport, but the Bridgeport of today offers new faces every week. People interested in family find Bridgeport an attractive home. It is a comfortable town in which to live. People are still friendly. A stranger may smile at you as you pass on the sidewalk and may even say hello.

CITY OF BRIDGEPORT

Harrison County, West Virginia, was formed in 1784 from a portion of Monongalia County. It was named for Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, colonial governor of Virginia (1781 - 1784), and forefather of two American presidents.

Clarksburg, the county seat, was established in 1785 and named for General George Rogers Clark.
