Harrison County's program for
gifted elementary students includes both acceleration and enrichment. Students
identified as gifted receive acceleration at their home school and attend
Adamston Magnet Center for an enrichment program.
School buses transport students
from their home schools to Adamston Magnet Center one day a week. First
and second graders attend on Monday, third graders on Tuesday, fourth graders
on Wednesday, and fifth graders on Thursday. Three teachers teach a variety
of classes during each twelve week period. Students select three or four
classes during each trimester (depending on the number of classes available
for their grade level).
Classes include innovative
approaches to math, science, social studies, language arts, foreign languages,
and computer technology.
This curriculum provides students
the opportunity to develop affective understanding by participating in
group dynamics, leadership activities, future planning, decision making,
socialization, and self-understanding.
Students develop critical thinking
skills through extended studies in math, language arts, social studies,
science and computer with emphasis on analysis, evaluation, and synthesis.
To develop a variety of communication
skills, a multi-media approach enhances listening, speaking, and writing
skills. Students increase problem-solving ability through creative problem
solving, inquiry, and inductive and deductive reasoning. They use appropriate
research tools and methods to develop self-directed inquiry skills. They
also participate in appropriate field trips.
Parents receive progress reports
each trimester. Teachers evaluate the activities of each student with comments
about progress. In the meantime, parents are encouraged to contact teacher
when they have questions.
Gifted education for elementary
students at Adamston Magnet Center is a positive step in the education
of Harrison County children.
