PARENT PAGE

Dear Parents,

As you know, parent involvement in the grade school was an essential part of your child's learning. It is just as crucial in the middle school. Remaining involved during the middle school years makes the parent-child bond even stronger. Children whose parent(s) are involved in their education are more confident, focused, and do better in school. Never underestimate how important you are in your child's education even at this age. As a way to stay more involved, I have outlined several steps on how you, as a parent, can ensure your child has a successful school year.

1. READ TOGETHER:Set aside a minimum of 15 minutes everyday and read silently
or aloud. Children this age still like to be to even if they act like they are
too old.

2. USE TV WISELY:Children who watch TV more than 10 hours a week or 2 hours a
day have a decrease in student achievement. Also, monitor the types of programs
that your child watches. Watch the shows together and discuss them.

3. ESTABLISH A DAILY FAMILY ROUTINE:Your family routines may include chores,
dinner, and bedtime. A routine makes life predictable and satisfying for family
members.

4. SCHEDULE DAILY HOMEWORK TIME:Spending more time on homework has a greater effect in the middle school and high school grades. Provide a well-lit, quiet place to
work. This place may be at home or the library. Be available for questions.
Remember, you do not have to know all the answers;showing an interest is more
important.

5. MONITOR OUT-OF-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES: To help your child spend more time constructively,
model good use of leisure time. Regular phone calls from you, a working parent,
to your child can help you stay involved in their activities and plans.

6. TALK WITH CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS:Learn more about your child by talking to them about their daily lives. This opens the door of communication and helps your child
feel more comfortable coming to you with a problem.
